Switching back to english: I have been in Japan at the Adobe Max. Woot! In the paragraph above I wanted to thank all people I met in Japan at the Max. I study Japanese for 4 years now, yet due to lack of time my japanese still sucks and most of the blog will be now and for the future in english.

Anyway: Back to topic. The Adobe Max in Japan was very interesting from a foreigners point of view, in fact so interesting that it took me a while to read into some of the things I saw there(one reason why this post is so late). I didn’t understand what most of the speakers said but the topics still were quite obvious and quite interesting. Totally I found it fascinating that the connection of devices takes a lot bigger focus than here in europe. For all that don’t know it yet: In the japanese culture things like QR codes and RFID or other NFC’s have already become kind of normal in daily life. Now the discussion goes more into applying those(at least that seems to be the big market these days). Lots of the companies that presented there really had communication in mind, like FMS calls mobile and alike.

Beside that I visited boring sessions about form life cycles as well as more interesting ones about the new FMS within, Flash based animes and alike. The most interesting topics, about which I will digg more are definitly: The Spark Project and Shibuya.js.

Shibuya.js

Shibuya.js is a developer group that have as side hobby cutting edge JavaScript stuff. And when I say cutting edge, I mean it that way.
Satoshi Ueyama, one of the 5 presentators, showed a runtime .swf parser that renders what ought to be rendered by flash player with javascript and the Canvas object. If you browse his blog a little you find more hardcore things like a 3d girl in JavaScript, a bubble ball or a 3D google maps implementation in Flash.
And while this alone might have satisfy most Moriyoshi Koizumi presented a javascript only audio generator. The other three spoke about performance tweeking in JavaScript and Flash environments, about small libraries they made(which I couldn’t find by now) and alike. My japanese is by far not good enough to read without a dictionary and much time … so: maybe I will dig into them later.

The Spark Project

I think/hope most of you have already heard about the Spark Project. I my office everybody associated it only with the saqoosha’s (Tomohiko Koyama) project of augmented reality. His presentation was also quite fancy in comparison with any I’ve seen by now: He presented with a friend-made, huge mouse hat and a furry suit using his FlarToolKit for the presentation itself. No wonder he is that famous. But the others could still make their points. I am personally, due to my work at the as2lib, very interested in the projects presented by Shindo Yoshihiro that feature basic tools like unit tests or thread handling. His recent(and presented) work is a new tweening engine. As inspiration for the former mentioned javascript audio generator Takaaki Yamazaki showed his recent developments and examples of the sazameki sound library. It is nice to see that Joa&André’s work has creates response even in Japan. A interesting(and for me new) trend is shown by Shuhei Terai with TeraFire. I obviously forgot or underestimated how important it can be to maximize the ease-of-use. Yet the image was easily destroyed by n_mattun(matsuno noritchika? not sure about how to spell the name in western letters) who showed one of the most customizable button as .mxp that I’ve seen in a while. Luckily there were also solution driven things like the SWFWheel, a workaround for the loose implementation of the mouse wheel in flash player by Takashi Izukawa.

I hope you take now a closer look at the Spark project, I will do so for sure. Its one of the rare cases in the flash ecosystem where a lot of people united and the result is quite stunning(to me). Most likely some of my posts will cover topics of this project.

Oh: And for all that are interested into augumented reality: b-o-w.jp shows a nice twitter augmented reality.

  1. Christoph Atteneder

    Hi Martin,

MAX Japan – Sounds pretty awesome. Especially the huge project library of the Spark Project. Probably I will consider attending MAX Asia instead of MAX Europe next time :-)

    cheers,

    Christoph
